Last month, K-pop album sales surpassed 10 million copies for the first time in history thanks to the expansion of global fandom.
According to Kim Jin-woo, a senior researcher at the Circle Chart (formerly Gaon Chart), sales of real albums (from 1st to 400th places) in July this year were 18.27 million copies, up 40.2 percent from the previous month.
This is the first time that monthly album sales have exceeded 10 million since circle chart aggregation began in 2010. Sales of albums jumped 116.8 percent in July last year.
Looking at sales by individual records last month, girl group aespa's second mini-album "Girls" topped the list with 1,645,255 copies.
It was followed by ENHYPEN's "Manifesto: Day 1" (MANIFESTO: DAY 1) 1,395,608 copies and SEVENTEEN's "SECTOR 17" 1,338,826 copies. In addition, ATEEZ, ITZY, Kim Ho-joong, Youngtak, J-Hope, BTS (BTS), and STAYC were listed in the top 10.
In the January-July period of this year, cumulative record sales reached about 46 million units, up about 15 million from the same period last year.
Kim Jin-woo, a senior researcher, analyzed, "As the size of K-pop idols' fandom expands globally, sales are increasing to a level that we have never experienced before."
He pointed out, "After Lim Young-woong, the combined sales of Kim Ho-joong (trot singer) and Young Tak, which are centered on domestic demand, exceeded 1 million copies, and internal and external favorable factors played a role in the real record market at the same time."
It is also worth noting that as of the first half of this year, the proportion of sales of Gubo, which was previously released in addition to Shinbo, reached around 10%. As K-pop global fans continue to flow in, it is analyzed that the fact that they look for old records and listen to them increases sales of Gubo.
Senior researcher Kim predicted, "It will continue to be a driving force for growth in the real music market."
Meanwhile, last month's music usage was MBC TV's entertainment program, "What's the use of playing?"WSG WannaB project songs produced by '' gained popularity, increasing 6.5% from the previous month, succeeding in rebounding.
"Unlike the past 'Sprout Three' project, the WSG WannaB project song will not be affected by seasonal issues because it is not directly related to the summer season," said Kim, a senior researcher. "This will allow us to run long on the chart until the second half of this year."
