The 26th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) announced on the 21st that it has selected director Kim Hyun-jin's "Seoul Horror Story" as the work to be introduced at this year's Cannes International Film Festival Fantastic 7.
Fantastic 7 is a fantasy genre revitalization program by Marché du Film. Director Kim Hyun-jin will participate in the Cannes Film Market on May 22 to pitch to filmmakers around the world.
"Seoul Horror Story" (director Kim Hyun-jin, production company Red Peter) is a work that captures the three-colored horrors hidden behind it, mainly in the high-tech city of Seoul. The three areas of Sinseondong, Gangnam, and Noryangjin in Seoul were decorated with their respective colors in the form of omnibuses, vividly depicting the anxiety and fear of contemporary people.
"Seoul Horror Story" is the official selection in the "Project Spotlight Korea" category of the 2020 BIFAN "NAFF Project Market." Since 2019, BIFAN has selected one of the official NAFF project market selections every year to support pitching in Fantastic 7. Starting with "Skillful Girl" (director Kim Soo-young) in 2019, "Elysit" (director Kang Min-ji) in 2020 and "Eternal Child" (director Yoo Eun-jung) in 2021.
Director Lee Ji-seung, who was in charge of reviewing the NAFF project market, said, "The horror movie plan featuring the city of Seoul itself was fresh. It could give fresh impetus to the global film industry with a composite genre that makes good use of the characteristics of the three regions."
Fantastic 7 is a program launched by Cannes Film Market in 2019. It aims to build a network between fantastic film festivals around the world, develop genre films, and foster global rookies. BIFAN was listed side by side in Fantas 7, along with Sassins, Toronto, South by Southwest, Guadalajara, Cairo, and New Zealand Film Festival. The projects selected by the Seven Fantastic Film Festivals automatically enter the Cannes Film Market and have the opportunity to show them to filmmakers around the world.
This year's Cannes Film Market will be held for nine days from May 17 to 25. The Cannes Film Market, which is held every May with the Cannes Film Festival, will be operated in an online and offline hybrid manner starting this year. The directors of Fantastic 7 will participate in field pitching events, business meetings, and networking events of Fantastic Mixer to meet with filmmakers from around the world.
Meanwhile, director Kim Hyun-jin graduated from the Korean Film Academy and participated in Lee Chang-dong's film "Peppermint Candy" (1999) as an assistant director. He directed short films "Reaction," "Stranger Day," and independent feature "Mahong's House." He has mainly written scenarios of thriller and horror genres, and was selected as excellent works and production support by BIFAN, the Korea Creative Content Agency, the Gyeonggi Film Commission, and the Korea Film Council for "Fear of Seoul," and was recognized for his original plan.
Lee Dong-ha, CEO of Red Peter, a film company that participated as a producer, worked as producers of the 63rd Cannes International Film Festival's screenplay award-winning films "Poetry" (2010) and "Hwai: A Child Who Swallowed a Monster" (2013), and produced "Train to Busan" (2016) and "Penando" (2020). At the 70th Cannes International Film Festival, he was named the only Asian producer in the "10 producers the world should pay attention to" released by Variety, a global film magazine.
